His language fully reflects his complexity, combining ancestral signs and symbols with letters, numbers, archetypal forms and evocative images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2959 size-large alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-4-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Joe tilson\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-4-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-4.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Born in London in 1928, Tilson studied first at St. Martin&#8217;s School of Art (1949 &#8211; 1952) and then at the Royal College of Art in London, where he received, in 1955, the Rome Prize that led him to spend a year in Italy. Here he met who would have become his wife, Joslyn Morton, also an art student and a pupil of Marino Marini. The two live first in Sicily (in Cefal\u00f9) and then in Venice, where they got married in 1956.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2957 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-3-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">The 1960s opened with an intense exhibition activity that brought Joe Tilson to the XXXII Venice Biennale (1964), as one of the leading exponents of English Pop Art. <span class=\"\">In the same years he experimented different materials and techniques, elaborating the famous Key-box and Spiral-box series, inspired by interlocking games for children, and compositions related to the theme of ziqqurat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Joe Tilson over Pop Art<\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">His language changed radically during the seventies: disappointed by the direction in which technology and industrial development were leading the company,<\/span> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2955 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Joe-tilson-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/>Tilson started to <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"\">create works with poor materials, such as stones, ropes or straws, detachingfrom the contemporary temporal dimension, inspired by Greek and Roman mythology and Neoplatonic philosophy. He instead started facing universal themes such as the five senses, the four elements, the cardinal points, combining symbols<\/span> <span class=\"\">from the most various cultures including stairs, letters of the alphabet, words, labyrinths.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">These works belong to the <strong>Alchera series<\/strong> and correspond to a change in the life of the artist, who moved with the whole family first to Wilthshire, then to Italy, to a farm near Cortona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">Joe Tilson was also passionately dedicated to graphic arts, making numerous prints and multiple art works that led him win the <strong>Grand Prix<\/strong> at <strong>the Ljubljana International Biennial in 1997<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">In 2014 Villa Manin celebrated<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">just his graphic production of the Sixties <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.villamanin.it\/le-nostre-proposte\/mostre\/joe-tilson\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">a retrospective exhibition.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For Bolaffi created a bright cover entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/en\/shop\/bolaffi-art-en\/joe-tilson-blue\/\">Blue<\/a>, <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">published in the series of art multiples dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/old.marottaeditori.com\/en\/product-category\/bolaffi-art-en\/iris-colors\/\">Colors of Iris<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Tilson has lived many lives: carpenter, pilot of R.A.F., teacher, leading artist of English Pop Art.
